TOHO confirmed that Godzilla has been nominated for two 2025 Licensing International Excellence Awards. Specifically, the IP has been nominated for Best Live Action Brand and Best Hardlines or Packaged Goods Collaboration.
Its nomination for Best Live Action Brand is due to its recent boom in pop culture due to the release of Godzilla Minus One, the MonsterVerse films, collaborations with Fortnite, new merch, comics, and more. The nomination for Best Hardlines or Packaged Goods Collaboration is specifically due to the recent collaboration between Godzilla and Santa Cruz on skate decks and other apparel. The Licensing Expo Las Vegas will announce the winners of the awards on May 20.
Recently, according to an article from Bloomberg Japan, the next film from director Takashi Yamazaki will be a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One. Yamazaki directed the original film, which released in 2023.
Godzilla Minus One focuses on a different, more rageful iteration of the titular monster. The movie received an Oscar for best visual effects. While TOHO has not confirmed any official details about the follow-up’s story, in a previous interview, Yamazaki stated that he wanted a sequel to have “a more serious tone of kaiju-versus-kaiju with human drama.”
WEBTOON and IDW also announced a collaboration where they would digitally publish the Godzilla: Unnatural Disasters anthology comic. It will be available to read on the WEBTOON website starting on April 25.
Lastly, Godzilla Minus One is available now for streaming on Netflix. The black and white version, Godzilla Minus Color, is also accessible on the service.
