Persistant Studios has announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support the PopcornFX middleware. Developers have utilized the software for games such as the WWE franchise and Forza Horizon series.
PopcornFX helps to generate particle effects within several games. It can be used with Persistant Studios’ in-house engine, as well as Unity and Unreal. The middleware being compatible with the Switch 2 is in-line with Nintendo’s continued commitment to making the console more visually enhanced than its predecessor. It will also support Unreal Engine 5, Criware, Yebis, and Enlighten.
Recently, Nintendo announced that they have delayed Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in Canada. It made the decision in order to align orders with the new pre-order timing in the United States. Originally, pre-orders would’ve started on April 9. The delay is due to recent tariffs in the United States.
Back in 2019, the company moved much of its production of Nintendo Switch to Vietnam to avoid any potential impact of tariffs between the United States and China. In regard to Nintendo Switch 2, the U.S. government has placed a 46% tariff Vietnam’s exports to the country. In a report, Vietnam General Secretary Tô Lâm expressed interest in cutting tariffs on the United States “down to zero” if a deal can be reached. Both governments have announced nothing at this time.
Nintendo Switch 2 will support the PopcornFX middleware. The console will release on June 5, 2025, alongside Mario Kart World. The console will be available to purchase for $449.99 at launch in the United States, as confirmed by Nintendo. A bundle including Mario Kart World will also release for $499.99.
