Disney Step Augmented Reality Game Available Now in Japan

Go on a treasure hunting adventure with beloved Disney characters.

Disney has released Disney Step, a new augmented reality game, for mobile devices in Japan. The game is currently unavailable outside the region.

Step features mechanics similar to other augmented reality games like Pokémon Go or Pikmin Bloom. Players navigate their real life surroundings to find treasure alongside familiar Disney characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Chip and Dale, and Pluto. The game is free-to-play but features microtransactions that provide cosmetics via Gacha items.

Recently, Disney released Epic Mickey Rebrushed, a remastered version of the 2010 cult classic. Warren Spector, former developer on games such as Deus Ex and System Shock, sought to make a game inspired by Disney’s past and the aforementioned immersive sims. Nintendo and THQ Nordic initially announced the remake in February 2024.

In Final Weapon’s review of Epic Mickey Rebrushed, we rated it a 4.5/5 and said it was “a fantastic remaster that manages to resurrect a cult classic in a way that is respectful of the source material while updating it for modern audiences.” Steam describes Rebrushed as follows:

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed brings the magic of Disney to life in a vibrant 3D platformer. This beautiful remake sends Mickey Mouse on an epic journey through Wasteland, a realm of forgotten Disney characters. As Mickey, you will dive into a fantastical world and, armed with paint and thinner, shape your adventure and the fate of this alternate world.

Lastly, Disney Step is available now on mobile devices in Japan. It is unknown if the game will release in other regions around the world.
