Sony released its financial results for the three months ended on December 31, 2024, revealing that PlayStation 5 sales have topped 75 million units.
According to sales numbers from the financial results, 9.5 million PlayStation 5 units were shipped during the latest quarter. This is up 1.3 million units from the same period during the previous fiscal year.
129 million active users were on PlayStation Network as of December 31, which is up six million from the same period exactly one year ago. Combined PS4 and PS5 software sales reached 95.9 million units during the quarter, resulting in a 6.2 million increase year over year.
11.6 million of the software sales were first-party games, which is down 4.6 million from the same period last fiscal year. Moreover, 74% of the software sales were full game digital downloads, resulting in a 3% year-over-year decrease.
Sony recently announced Hideaki Nishino will be the president and sole CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, effective April 1, 2025. Previously, he was a joint-CEO alongside Herman Hulst. Hulst will still continue to serve CEO of the Studio Business Group, and he will now report directly to Nishino.
Further, Sony also announced Hiroki Totoki, President, COO and CFO of Sony Group Corporation will step down from Chairman to become President and CEO of Sony Group Corporation. Lin Tao, SVP, Finance, Corporate Development and Strategy for SIE, will also step down from her position at SIE to become CFO of Sony Group Corporation.
