Final Fantasy creator and Mistwalker CEO Hironobu Sakaguchi is finalizing the story for the studio’s next game, according to a recent Bloomberg interview. Sakaguchi notes that the game is something new by Mistwalker, but he didn’t elaborate further. Sakaguchi simply said, “We’ll say it’s something new, for now.”
In this same interview, Sakaguchi noted that he has “no interest” in porting or bringing Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon to modern platforms. These titles were both developed by Mistwalker in collaboration with Microsoft, and they’re only available on Xbox 360.
Moreover, Mistwalker is working on the release of Fantasian Neo Dimension in winter 2024 for Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. This console and PC port features new voiceovers, a new difficulty option, and improved visuals. Previously, Fantasian was exclusive to Apple Arcade.
Fantasian Neo Dimension is published by Square Enix. This is significant, since the game marks Sakaguchi’s return to the company after departing many years ago. In fact, Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida worked with Sakaguchi on Fantasian Neo Dimension. Yoshida belongs to Creative Studio 3, which is the studio at Square Enix responsible for Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI.
A sequel to Fantasian could be in the works. Recently, a trademark for Fantasian Dark Edge was filed in Japan, leading to speculation that this could be a sequel. However, Mistwalker has not outright stated that a sequel is in development. At the very least, a new Mistwalker game is in development.
