According to a new report from VGC, Square Enix held a company-wide meeting today announcing layoffs for the United States and European divisions. The layoffs are set to impact these teams over the next month, with VGC reporting “people working in publishing, IT, and Square Enix’s Collective indie games division would be predominantly affected.” These cuts are being made as part of the company’s restructuring, which is focused on new strategies such as multiplatform titles.
Employees were informed that they will find out this week if they are affected. VGC also reported that many Slack channels were locked for Square Enix employees following the meeting. This news follows the company’s financial report and new business plan. It was revealed this morning that Fiscal Year 2024 brought profits down 69.7% from FY2023, with game cancelations taking up a chunk of that loss.
These cuts mark yet another wave of layoffs across the games industry in 2024. We’ve seen tens of thousands of employees lose their jobs via layoffs in just over five months, with companies like Microsoft, Activision, Take-Two, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Electronic Arts, and more involved.
We’ll update as more information is revealed.
