After saving Jinshi’s life and being injured, Maomao is set to make a full recovery in The Apothecary Diaries episode 20. Of course, her duties as an attendant won’t end once she’s back in good health.
The first cour of The Apothecary Diaries ran for 12 episodes and quickly became one of the most popular anime of 2023. In 2024, the second cour continues the anime’s momentum as Maomao takes on various assignments as Jinshi’s assistant. The most recent episode saw Maomao and Jinshi become closer than ever, as Maomao saves his life and averts an evil ploy.
The Apothecary Diaries Episode 20 Release Date and Time
Episode 20 of The Apothecary Diaries premieres on February 24 at 10:45 a.m. PDT, or 1:45 p.m. EDT, on Crunchyroll. The new episode is titled “Thornapple.” A total of 12 episodes will be released in the second cour, with four new episodes to come after episode 20. By the second cour’s finale, 24 episodes will be available for the first season of The Apothecary Diaries.

What Happened in Episode 19? (Recap)
The Apothecary Diaries episode 19 puts all of the pieces together from previous cases in the second cour, such as the warehouse explosion and the metalworker’s untimely death. With a little help from Lihaku, Maomao determines that many of the incidents in the outer court are seemingly linked to a ploy by Suirei. The court’s ceremony is in trouble, so Maomao quickly makes her way over to prevent a disaster.
Maomao confronts a guard that’s protecting the entrance to the hall being used for the ceremony. She’s incredibly persistent about the ceremony being a trap, which continues to anger the guard. In a rather shocking scene, Maomao gets decked in the face with the guard’s blunt weapon, giving her a concussion. However, she’s incredibly persistent, and the guards are baffled enough to let her pass. Lakan, who attempted to make use of Maomao in the current situation, also watches as his daughter enters the hall.
The conspiracy becomes even more clear, as Maomao discovers that the one conducting the ceremony is Jinshi himself. He’s about to be killed by massive wooden scaffolding, but Maomao is able to dive in and save him. Maomao’s leg gets a gashed open, and Jinshi is shocked to see Maomao intervene to save him.
Lakan is in complete shock, considering his daughter almost died. The episode shows that Lakan still has a heart with concern for Maomao, despite his own demeanor toward her.
Episode 20 Preview
Maomao recovers from her injuries in The Apothecary Diaries episode 20, but she’s back on the case to find out what’s happening in the outer court. It appears that Lady Loulan will be an important character for this particular episode, too.
