Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation 5 sales reached a total of 54.8 million units worldwide as of December 31, 2023, according to the company’s financial results. Sales for the console are up year-over-year as more stock is available for consumers around the world.
PS5 sales reached a total of 40 million units sold in July 2023, just a few years removed from logistical challenges during the console’s launch and the COVID-19 pandemic. Six months later, outgoing SIE CEO Jim Ryan confirmed the console sold over 50 million units. Ryan also confirmed that more stock for the PS5 was available at retail during the holiday season.
PlayStation 5 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Sales Update
8.2 million PlayStation 5 units were shipped and sold from during the three months ended on December 31. This is up 1.1 million units year-over-year from the same period during the previous fiscal year. Moreover, Sony reveals that 123 million monthly active users were on PlayStation Network as of December 31. This is an increase of 11 million users compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Roughly 89.7 million software units were sold during the quarter, which is up 3.2 million from the 86.5 million software sold during the same period of the previous fiscal year. However, first-party software units sold were down by 4.6 million from the previous year’s 20.8 million units sold from the same period. Approximately 16.2 million first-party software units from Sony were sold in those three months ending on December 31.
66% of PlayStation’s software sales were full game digital downloads. This is up 4% from the same period during the previous fiscal year. Additionally, Sony confirms that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 surpassed 10 million copies sold as of February 4. Five million copies were sold between November 2023 and February 2024.
The next major update for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch on March 7. The update will include the long-anticipated New Game Plus mode, as well as feature new suits and a few more highly requested features.
