Funimation announced that its app and website services will be ending on April 2, 2024 as part of its merger agreement with Crunchyroll, which was enacted in March 2022. Funimation users will be able to transfer data and their subscription to a Crunchyroll equivalent, but digital purchases from Funimation will not be carried over.
2022 was a very notable year for Crunchyroll, as Sony’s acquisition of the company was already complete and Funimation merged with Crunchyroll. The merger meant that the Funimation library and simulcast series would be available on Crunchyroll. However, concern began to grow after the subsequent purchase and closure of Right Stuf, leading many to believe that Funimation would be next on the chopping block.
Funimation Ending Services As Crunchyroll Takes Over
In a new support post, Funimation confirms the app and website will be ending its services on April 2, 2024, with most content already being migrated to Crunchyroll. The Funimation team is working to bring more anime titles to Crunchyroll, but some dubbing options may be unavailable on the platform. By default, Crunchyroll will select the available language in the user’s region. Users may change language and subtitle options from the video player, of course.
Funimation subscriptions will be automatically transferred to Crunchyroll, with fees being reflected in the next billing cycle through Crunchyroll itself or a third-party access platform. The subscription price may also increase when compared to Funimation’s original subscription plans. To access Crunchyroll subscriptions, users must log in to the platform by using the same credentials from their Funimation account. Users with no prior Crunchyroll account will get a prompt, allowing them to sync data like Funimation watchlist and history to the platform. However, Funimation digital copies will not be transferred over.
“We understand that you may have concerns about your digital copies from Funimation. These Digital copies available on Funimation were a digital access to the content available on the DVDs or Blu-rays purchased.”
Please note that Crunchyroll does not currently support Funimation Digital copies, which means that access to previously available digital copies will not be supported. However, we are continuously working to enhance our content offerings and provide you with an exceptional anime streaming experience. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to explore the extensive anime library available on Crunchyroll.”
A full Q&A regarding the Funimation app and website closure may be found on the official support website, and a support team will help those needing assistance with the account migration.
