Gamebiz is reporting that Tokyo RPG Factory will merge with Square Enix, and the studio will be disbanded.
Tokyo RPG Factory was created by Yosuke Matsuda after taking over as Square Enix President for Yoichi Wada. It was founded to develop titles inspired by titles like Chrono Trigger and other RPGs in the 1990s. The studio opened in 2014, with 2024 marking its 10th anniversary. It was 100% owned by Square Enix, so the studio will likely be disbanded.
A total of three different games were put out by Tokyo RPG Factory. These are I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, and Oninaki. These releases spanned from 2016 through 2019, with the studio not producing any new titles since Oninaki.
This is the second studio subsidiary owned by Square Enix to merge with the company following Luminous Productions last year. Luminous released Forspoken, which ultimately did not meet company expectations. Prior to that release, the studio was best known for its work on Final Fantasy XV and the Luminous Engine.
