ATLUS and Vanillaware released several new details about upcoming tactical fantasy RPG Unicorn Overlord, including new characters, classes, and combat systems.
Revealed as the “rebirth” of tactical fantasy RPGs, Unicorn Overlord combines overworld exploration, a robust combat system, and simulation mechanics. Alain, protagonist and prince of Cornia, is chosen to lead the Liberation Army and return peace to Fevrith. While exploring the world, the protagonist will meet various characters and complete certain activities to help the people of the land.
Unicorn Overlord Characters, Classes and Combat Systems
The Unicorn Overlord protagonist will meet various allies and enemies on his journey. These characters include Rosaline and Eltolinde, twin sisters that were reunited after the fall of the capital. These characters are aided by Ithilion, a swordsman and knight of Elheim.
Alcina, a witch loyal to the Zenoiran Army, will stand in Alain’s way. She appears to be assisting Galerius, the leader of Zenoira, in a devious plan. The protagonist will also come to blows with Baltro, a wizard that’s well-versed in dark magics.
Each character has a class that determines their combat abilities, weapons, traits, and skills. Over 60 class types are available in Unicorn Overlord, including:
- Housecarl – Boasts excellent Physical Attack. Can lower enemy Physical Defense. Can strike foes with a follow-up attack at the end of a battle.
- Gladiator – Boasts physical attack skills to hit an entire enemy row. Capable of self healing.
- Arbalist – Proficient both at attacking with a flurry of crossbow bolts and providing support from the back row.
- Cleric – Specialized in supporting allies with healing magick through a variety of recovery skills.
- Wyvern Knight An aerial unit capable of inflicting heavy damage on enemy infantry and cavalry. Vulnerable against ranged and caster attacks.
- Shaman – Specialized in skills which weaken their foes by obstructing their actions and reducing their abilities.
- Elven Fencer – Uses magick melee attacks to strike at their enemies with superlative finesse. Capable of creating barriers to protect allies from attacks.
- Werewolf – Excels at finishing off weakened enemies. Also possesses a special skill that improves their performance at night.
- Featherbow – An archer capable of debuffing foes and supporting allies. Possesses a high evasion rate, but susceptible to arrow fire.
Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses. Archers are strong against flying units, for example. However, some specialized classes may prove to alleviate some of the weaknesses normally associated with their type.
Leaders, Effects, and More
Leaders determine the unit’s movement type and Leader Effect. The Leader Effect grants a special bonus for the unit and its characters. For example, the Housecarl class gives a Leader Effect that quickly destroys obstacles.
In Unicorn Overlord, characters fall into three categories of movement type: Infantry, Cavalry, and Flying. Movement speed of Infantry and Cavalry increases while traveling on roads, while Cavalry’s mobility decreases in forests. Flying units may fly a great distance across any terrain, but they’re weak to archers.
Promotions and Auxiliary Stages will help improve the strength of units over time. Spending honors may promote a character to an advanced class, which boosts overall stats and unlocks new skills. Alain may advance to High Lord, which is a more powerful Cavalry class exclusive to him.
Auxiliary Stages let players battle phantom soldiers as many times as they like to earn XP and special items known as Treatises. These Treatises grant XP upon use.
