Remedy Entertainment has announced that will be rebooting their upcoming GAAS title nicknamed Vanguard into a cooperative “premium game.” The new game will be nicknamed Kestrel.
The new update comes just a few days after the release of Alan Wake 2. Remedy initially released Alan Wake in 2010. The game is the latest entry in “Remedy Entertainment’s Connected Universe.” The franchise includes the first Alan Wake, Quantum Break, and Control. It is unknown if the Kestrel will be included in the franchise.
Remedy Project Vanguard is Now Project Kestrel
In a recent press release, Remedy announced they are retooling their upcoming live service game nicknamed Vanguard into a premium game “with a strong, cooperative multiplayer component.” They revealed more details, stating:
Remedy signed a global agreement with Tencent as its publishing partner on December 28, 2021, to develop Vanguard. Due to uncertainties in creating a successful game to the rapidly changing free-to-play market and associated risks, the parties have discussed a new direction for the game project, which will be given the new codename, “Kestrel.”
The reboot comes as the project has reached the end of its proof-of-concept phase and after Remedy and Tencent had time to evaluate the project’s status and its next steps.
Additionally, Remedy has revealed that the new game “will lean more into Remedy’s core strengths.” It will also be built on assets already made from Vanguard. It is likely that the game will follow Remedy’s beloved approach to storytelling and gameplay. Kestrel will also no longer be free-to-play and will likely be available for full price on all consoles.
At the time of writing, little information about Kestrel‘s gameplay and story is known. Remedy will likely reveal more details about the game in the coming months. Lastly, Remedy’s most recent game, Alan Wake 2 is available now on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
