In a recent earnings call, Sony officially announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold 46.6 million shipments in three years. The announcement comes just in time for the imminent release of the PlayStation 5 Slim.

PlayStation has released several major games over the past few years since the console launched in 2020. Examples include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and God of War: Ragnarok. All games mentioned above are available now on the PlayStation 5.

In a recent sales earning, PlayStation announced that they had sold over 46.6 million units of the PlayStation 5 as of November 2023. 4.9 million PS5 units were specifically sold from June 30 to September 30, 2023. It is a 1.6 million increase from the same period in 2022.

The success likely comes from the recent release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Spider-Man 2 is the long-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. PlayStation also released God of War: Ragnarok in 2022. Both games have reached over 10 million combined copies sold, with Spider-Man 2 specifically already having sold 5 million copies in just under three weeks.

A few extra statistics are available via Gematsu:

    • There are 107 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network as of September 30, 2023, which is up five million from the 103 million active users during the same period the previous fiscal year.
    • PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 software combined sold 67.6 million units during the three months ended September 30, 2023, which is up 5.1 million from the 62.5 million software sold during the same period the previous fiscal year. 4.7 million units were first-party titles, which is down 1.9 million from the 6.6 million units sold during the same period the previous fiscal year. 67 percent of software sales were full game software digital downloads, which is up four percent from the same period the previous fiscal year.

Lastly, the PlayStation 5 digital and disc-version are available now in most local and online retailers. Both versions of the PlayStation 5 Slim will be available in the coming weeks.
