Capcom has announced that the next generation of their RE Engine framework is in development. The codename for the new project is REX or RE neXt engine.
Several of Capcom’s most recent games have utilized the RE, or the Reach for the Moon, engine. Examples include Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4, and Exoprimal. Capcom has not announced which of their upcoming games will take advantage of the REX Engine.
REX Engine In Development
In a conference from Capcom R&D, the company outlined its future plans and updates for the RE Engine. Towards the end of the video, Capcom R&D outlines the challenges of the RE Engine’s current iteration. These include:
- Expansion and diversification of project scale
- Need to efficiently handle large volumes of large size assets
- Need for a high degree of customization per title
- Used by overseas subcontractors, multinationalization of team members
- Importance of documentation, samples, and localization
- Increase in the number of mid-career and new graduates with commercial game engine experience
- Increased demand for customizability and usability
Capcom then goes on to state that the REX Engine will address these challenges and more. The new engine will not be built from scratch. Instead, the new technology and firmware will be gradually added to the existing RE Engine. It will be added to aspects such as REDox, REUI, RELog, REAssetStream, and more.
Adding REX into the existing RE Engine will bring the engine “to the next-generation level.” Capcom will reveal more details on the capabilities of the REX Engine “at another time.” Check out the full video below for more details:
Lastly, Capcom’s most recent games, Resident Evil 4, Exoprimal, and Street Fighter 6, are available now. Each game is available on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Exoprimal is also available through the Xbox Game Pass service. Capcom will reveal more details on REX in the coming months.
