Spider-Man 2: Do You Need to Play the Prequels?

Everything you need to know about the Insomniac Spider-Man universe before SM2.

    Published:

    Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is finally set to release on October 20. The upcoming superhero title is the long-anticipated follow-up to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

However, many fans may wonder whether they need to play SM2’s predecessors before the game’s release. Here’s everything you need to know about playing Spider-Man 2’s prequels before the game is available on October 20.

    What is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?

Spider-Man 2 is the latest entry in the beloved comic-book character’s mythos. Fans can expect many new suits and abilities to appear in the title. According to a recently released trailer, the game is described as follows:

Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, return for an exciting new adventure in the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise for the PS5 console. Nine months after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, we find Miles still enlisting Peter’s help, but when the mysterious symbiote appears, Peter and Miles’ relationships are put to the test.

Peter begins to change as he gains symbiote powers, and Miles, Mary Jane, Harry, and the rest of the friend group must help Peter while also facing the impending threats from a cast of new villains like Kraven, Lizard, Sandman, and Venom!

The game will be available on the PlayStation 5 exclusively this Friday. A day-one patch will be downloadable alongside the game.

Do You Need to Play Spider-Man 2’s Predecessors to Understand the Game?

For the most part, you do not need to play 2018’s Spider-Man or 2020’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales to understand Spider-Man 2. Each game has its own self-contained story, with some connections between games. However, some plot points from Spider-Man 2018 will be carried over to its sequel. These include the return of Harry/Norman Osborn, Mr. Negative, and Black Cat. For the most part, though, Spider-Man 2 is very self-contained and will not require extensive knowledge of its prequels.

If you want to try the series, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is available on the PlayStation 5 for $49.99. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is available for the same price on the PlayStation Store. Both Spider-Man 2 prequels are also available on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Fans can play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at 12:00 AM EDT on October 20, exclusively on the PlayStation 5.

Those purchasing a physical copy can note that it is fully playable with the content on the disc. However, Insomniac does recommend downloading the day-one update for improved performance in opening segments.

Spider-Man 2 will be available for everyone on Friday, October 20. So far, it has received dozens of rave reviews and averaged 91 on Metacritic. It seems that the title is set to be the ultimate Spider-Man experience for fans of the character.
