    Patapon Spiritual Successor Ratatan Revealed

    Patapon-style gameplay finally returns.

Ratata Arts and TVT announced Ratatan, a new rhythm action game and the spiritual successor to Patapon from the PlayStation Portable. The title was previously announced as Project JabberWocky, and BitSummit Let’s Go!! was the stage for a subsequent reveal.

Ratatan is being developed by several notable developers for the original Patapon series, which was co-developed by Pyramid and the defunct Sony Japan Studio. These developers include Patapon game designer Hiroyuki Kotani, composer Kenmei Adachi, and producer Kazuto Sakajiri. Fans may recognize Adachi’s music from the Patapon, Loco Roco, and Gran Turismo franchises.

A new Kickstarter campaign for Ratatan will launch on July 31 at 12:00 p.m. EDT / August 1 at 1:00 a.m. JST. The campaign’s launch will reveal more details about the upcoming title. Currently, platforms and a release date has not been announced. A new interview with VGC reveals some general information about the game, however.

According to producer Sakajiri, Ratatan will feature over 100 characters fighting on screen at once. Users may enjoy four-player simultaneous battles with adventure and roguelike elements. The developers strived to create a game like Patapon for the modern age, and the possibility to create a new Patapon game remains.

“The three main game concepts are over 100 cute characters fighting it out on screen, four-player simultaneous battles, and more adventure and roguelike elements than Patapon had,” said producer Kazuto Sakajiri when speaking with VGC.

Sakajiri added, “Patapon was a really unique experience at the time of its release and reflected the development environment of that era. We wanted to make another game like that for the modern age. There’s a possibility of maybe doing a Patapon sequel in the future, but for this we really wanted to make our own game, in our own style, with specific types of gameplay that reflect what we want. After that, if there’s a chance to speak to Sony about doing a Patapon sequel then we’ll go from there.”
