After months of planning, the Allied Employees Guild Improving SEGA (AEGIS-CWA) announced it has successfully won its union election. AEGIS-CWA will be the very first multi-departmental union in video gaming history in the U.S. with over 200 members of SEGA of America calling for the unionized movement.
SEGA workers in California have voted 91-26 in favor of unionizing the SEGA of America branch. The union spans across multiple departments of SEGA of America as workers collectively advocated for more fair wages, better treatment, and crucial benefits that would help the workforce thrive. Further, the union will now negotiate a working contract with SEGA and nail down more concrete details. In short, the workforce of SEGA of America has been officially unionized through AEGIS-CWA with today’s election.
SEGA of America Has Unionized
“We just won our union election 91-26,” AEGIS-CWA on its official Twitter account. “Our 200+ member union is now the LARGEST multi-department union of organized workers in the ENTIRE gaming industry. So excited to celebrate this win & head to the bargaining table w/ SEGA to continue building this company we love!”
AEGIS-CWA was established this past April by a supermajority of workers at the SEGA of America Irvine headquarters in California. Workers at the SEGA of America branch proclaimed that unionization is a must after receiving weak benefits, lower than industry standard wages, and minimal paths to promotion. The Communication Workers of America partnered with these workers through the CODE-CWA unionization campaign to get the movement off the ground in a legal and protected capacity. The ultimate goal of AEGIS-CWA was to improve and solidify working conditions for SEGA of America employees while ensuring SEGA remains competitive in the current gaming industry.
