Bandai Namco Filmworks and SUNRISE confirm the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Freedom movie will premiere on January 26, 2024 in Japan. A new trailer was shown during Anime Expo 2023, revealing a few more details about the upcoming film.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Freedom is the long-awaited sequel to SEED Destiny, which originally aired from 2004 to 2005. The new movie will pick up from where SEED Destiny left off, and the newly unveiled trailer reiterates the franchise’s theme of “freedom versus destiny.” Kira and Lacus may be seen in brief glimpses throughout the 30-second trailer before officially revealing the January 26 date. What’s more, Bandai Namco confirms that the new film takes place in the Cosmic Era (CE 75).
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Freedom Staff
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED director Mitsuo Fukuda returns to direct the upcoming movie. Moreover, Fukuda is joined by Liu Goto as co-scriptwriters, and Fukuda’s late wife Chiaki Morosawa contributed toward the script before her passing in 2016. According to Fukuda, the story was finalized in 2008, and Morosawa had fallen ill shortly after 2005’s SEED Destiny ended. Additionally, series character designer Hisashi Hirai also reprises his role for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Freedom’s staff.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Freedom is just one of several parts of the is part of the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Project initiative, which was previously announced in 2021. The initiative includes the upcoming film, a new Mobile Suit Gundam SEED game, and the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Eclipse side-story manga.
