One of the biggest surprises of the June 2023 Direct was the reveal of a remake of Super Mario RPG. First released in 1996, Super Mario RPG was a cult classic JRPG set in the Mario universe. However, the game has been in limbo for years. This is because the partnership between Square Enix and Nintendo, the two companies that worked on the game, completely broke off. That said, when the remake was initially announced, many people theorized that the game would be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch Online service, NSO. Here’s an overview of where and how you’ll be able to play Super Mario RPG before its release in November 2023.
Will Super Mario RPG be Available on Nintendo Online?
Despite Super Mario RPG being initially released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the game will not be available on the Nintendo Switch Online service. The upcoming release is a remake built from the ground up. Even though it is a 1:1 remake, the game will not be released in any form on the NSO.
Super Mario RPG has been released on Nintendo’s virtual console platform before. The game was available for about fifteen dollars on Wii and Wii U. It was also bundled with the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017. However, this is the first time the game has been remade for modern hardware and devices.
However, there is another way to use Nintendo Switch Online Service to buy Super Mario RPG Remake. Nintendo Vouchers are available through NSO for $100 dollars, allowing you to get two games for free regardless of the price. So if you want to grab both Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros. Wonder later this year, use the vouchers to save $20.
Release Information
Super Mario RPG will release on November 17, 2023. The game is now available for pre-order at most local and online retailers, including the Nintendo Switch eShop.
