Circana published official video game market results for March 2023 in the U.S., revealing that the PlayStation 5 is the best-selling console of the month. This past March, the PS5 continued its sales dominance in 2023 for the third consecutive month.
According to Circana executive director Mat Piscatella, growth in PS5 hardware sales drove overall video game spending throughout the month of March 2023. PS5 was the best-selling hardware platform in units and dollars for March 2023 as well as 2023 year-to-date. Hardware sales for the PS5 have now surpassed the PS4 on a time-aligned basis, which currently stands at 29 months in the U.S. market.
Increased PS5 supply greatly contributed toward higher year-to-date hardware spending in 2023. Year-to-date hardware spending is now 21% higher when compared to the same period last year. This brings total year-to-date hardware spending to $1.5 billion in March 2023.
Sony’s PS5 DualSense Edge Wireless Controller Black ranked as the month’s best-selling game-pad, claiming another top spot for the PS5 in March 2023. Accessories spending grew 1% in March 2023 when compared to March 2022, bringing total spending last month to $239 million.
Resident Evil 4 remake was a new release in March 2023 and quickly became the best-selling game of the month. Capcom’s latest release also became the third best-selling game of 2023 year-to-date. Hogwarts Legacy dropped to second place in March 2023, but the title remains as the best-selling game of 2023 to date.
