Meta has announced that support for the original Meta Quest is set to end in 2024. For those familiar with Meta’s hardware lineup, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Quest 2 was released a few years prior, and even the Quest 3 is supposedly set to release this year. Keeping a headset from 2019 around doesn’t make too much sense for Meta, especially considering the lack of newer hardware inside.
We can expect the Quest 2 to start its exit following the launch of the Quest 3, especially with the rumored features of the new model. The Quest 3 is set to utilize uOLED technology, alongside a chipset that is rumored to be 2x more powerful than the Quest 2. Power like that makes optimizing challenging, especially as games get bigger and bigger.
Bug fixes and security updates will cease in 2024, with all sorts of features being disabled and turned off. These will essentially be exclusive to Quest 2 and Quest 3 going forward, almost forcing those with original Quests to upgrade.
You can check out what’s changing for Quest 1 owners below:
We launched Quest 1 over four years ago and we are grateful to the Quest 1
community for pushing VR forwards. As we look to the future, we remain committed
to supporting the community of Quest 1 users and will continue to support the
headset with a few changes:
You will still be able to use your Quest 1 headset and available apps.
• We won’t be delivering new features to Quest 1.
• We plan to continue maintaining the system software with critical bug fixes and
security patches until 2024.
• Quest 1 users will no longer be able to create or join a party.
Quest 1 users who currently have access to Meta Horizon Home social features
will lose access to these features on 5 March 2023. You won’t be able to invite
others to your Home or visit someone else’s Home.
Thank you to the entire Quest 1 community for helping us get to where we are today.
While Meta Quest support may be ending, the future of the Quest seems bright with the Quest Pro now available, as well as the Quest 3 on the horizon.
