More JRPGs to Try if You Loved Persona 5 Royal on Nintendo Switch

Great games to try that are like Persona 5 Royal.

So, you just bought and played Persona 5 Royal on Switch. You are either a new fan trying the game out or a current fan enjoying a replay. No matter what camp you belong in, there are plenty of other Switch games like P5R for you to also play and enjoy. That’s what we’ll be covering!

    Shin Megami Tensei V

Shin Megami Tensei, is the parent series of Persona. Persona used to have SMT in their titles as well. Anyways, this is the most recent entry in Atlus’ legendary franchise. You’ll recognize the demons and aspects of the combat and design. SMTV isn’t as story-focused as Persona, as it offers a very different flavor of story. SMTV has multiple routes revolving around moral alignments that you fall into depending on how you respond to different situations. The combat system is the refined ‘Press Turn’ system. You don’t get ‘All Out Attacks’ and ‘Once More’ when gaining the advantage on enemies. Instead, you get extra turns to use. However, be careful. These are demons, evil creatures that will attempt to gain an advantage over you. They too can get more turns via press turns all while stopping your assault. SMT has a more serious tone and a more hardcore battle system, but you still have plenty of Atlus charm and similar mechanics. Persona borrowed most of these and put a spin on them anyways. So, be sure to enjoy this different flavor of Atlus RPGs!

    Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore

This game has a much lighter tone than Persona and especially mainline SMT games. Its story and characters focus on the Japanese entertainment industry, from Idols to Tokusatsu. The main characters even have persona like entities that are Fire Emblem characters. Yep, this is a crossover between Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei. It takes more cues from SMT/Persona gameplay-wise, with the same weakness exploitation focus. The game has unique battle mechanics of its own, such as Sessions. The UI and some ideas from this game are even reused and updated in SMTV. So gameplay wise you get battles that are similar to Persona’s, dungeons are designed and have a similar concept to the heart palaces, and you even have character interactions in the same vein. There’s a Joker costume in the Switch port of this game to boot!

NEO: The World Ends With You

This game takes place in Shibuya, a famous district in Tokyo. That alone gives it a similar setting to Persona 5. However, this focuses on building a team to escape a new game, where if you lose, you face erasure. These teens don’t fight with demons and magic, and instead have psychic powers given to them from pins! Get through each day while building your team and meeting mission requirements. The story has a big focus on the characters and their growth, similar to Persona 5. The gameplay is action-oriented. While you’re fighting for you and your teammates’ survival, don’t forget to enjoy yourselves. Shibuya has plenty of clothing stores to visit and restaurants to try out! Equip your party with the latest and greatest, then stop to enjoy some good eats that give you permanent stat bonuses! This is a great and stylish game that has the same spirit as Persona 5, but plenty of different systems and its own unique style.

    And of course…More Persona Games!

More Persona games are on the way to Nintendo Switch! If you enjoy Persona 5 Royal, it can’t hurt to enjoy the upcoming Persona ports. Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden will launch on Nintendo Switch on January, 19, 2023! Whether you wanna play these great entries to discover the origins and progression of the modern Persona formula or replay these great games on a modern portable, it’s always a safe bet to play more games from a franchise you like! Also, Persona 5 Strikers is available on Nintendo Switch. You can enjoy this sequel game done in the Warriors franchise style. The game combines over-the-top action from Warriors with the style of Persona 5 to create a fantastic action RPG.
