Microsoft is shutting down Mixer and entering a partnership with Facebook Gaming

Microsoft has announced today that Mixer will be shutting down on July 22nd. The company is entering a partnership with Facebook Gaming for the long term. Existing Mixer users and streamers will be transitioning over to Facebook Gaming in the coming weeks. In addition, top Mixer streamers like Ninja and Shroud may stream on Twitch once again. Here’s what Microsoft’s Phil Spencer had to say, courtesy of The Verge:

“We started pretty far behind, in terms of where Mixer’s monthly active viewers were compared to some of the big players out there,” says Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s head of gaming, in an interview with The Verge. “I think the Mixer community is really going to benefit from the broad audience that Facebook has through their properties, and the abilities to reach gamers in a very seamless way through the social platform Facebook has.”

Spencer states that this is good for the future of the XCloud streaming service, bringing it to Facebook’s massive platform.

“It wasn’t as much about return on sell, it was about finding a partnership that was the best things for the community and streamers,” explains Spencer. “We think this is it, and it gives us a great place to launch more xCloud content and give gamers the ability to play from there.”
