In an interview, head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka revealed that SEGA previously wanted to cancel the entire Sonic the Hedgehog game series. However, the movie adaptations seemingly saved the series from death.
Iizuka states the following about the series: “There had been good times, and there had been bad times… during the worst times, I was told by the higher-ups that we should cancel the entire franchise. I had to fight within the organization to keep the franchise as long as possible. The biggest milestone for me was the first movie… that had been a great hit and definitely changed the course of this franchise.”
In the future, the series will get a new animated children’s cartoon, the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie, and likely an entirely new entry in the game franchise. On the latter, he mentions that “The franchise itself is rooted in video games. We’re just going to base everything upon the video games. That’s our core principle,” and that the next game may have an increased focus on story.
Recently, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 wrapped filming ahead of its release on March 19, 2027. A majority of the cast from the previous films will reprise their roles. This includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, Keanu Reeves as Shadow, and Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone. As previously announced, Kristen Bell will play the role of Amy Rose. Lastly, the following actors have been cast in currently unannounced roles:

- Matt Berry (What We Do In the Shadows, Fallout)
- Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, The Last of Us Season 1)
- Richard Ayoade (Soul, The IT Crowd)
