Lionsgate announced that Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 hit anime film Ghost in the Shell will return to theaters in North America for the 30th-anniversary 4K re-release on September 18. The company also released an official re-release trailer for the run on its own YouTube channel, and a new theatrical poster for the film.

The Ghost in the Shell originally premiered in Japan in November 1995. The film is directed by Mamoru Oshii and features music by Kenji Kawai, with Kazunori Itō handling the screenplay. It is based on Masamune Shirow’s hit manga of the same name.

In the year 2029, the barriers of our world have been broken down by the net and by cybernetics, but this brings new vulnerability to humans in the form of brain-hacking. When a highly-wanted hacker known as ‘The Puppetmaster’ begins involving them in politics, Section 9, a group of cybernetically enhanced cops, are called in to investigate and stop the Puppetmaster.
The film has also inspired The Ghost in the Shell, a new anime series that began airing on July 7. Fans can watch the anime in Japanese or English on Amazon Prime Video.
