Paramount Plus has announced that the Golden Axe animated series will premiere on the service on September 15. The first trailer for the series has also released.
Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad, Napoleon Dynamite animated show) have co-created the new TV series. It adapts the SEGA arcade game of the same name, which first released in 1989 for the Sega Genesis. The game is a side-scrolling arcade beat-em-up that has been ported over the years for several consoles. The cast, as previously announced, includes:
- Matthew Rhys as Gilius Thunderhead
- Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib
- Lisa Gilroy as Tyris Flare
- Liam McIntyre as Ax Battler
- Carl Tart as Chronos “Evil” Lait
10 episodes of the series will release, though it is unknown if all episodes will premiere at the same time, or if one episode will release every week. Check out the first trailer for Golden Axe below:

In an homage to SEGA’s iconic 1989 video game, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won’t seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all.
Lastly, back in 2023, SEGA announced that it would resurrect Golden Axe alongside franchises like Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi. The status of Golden Axe is unknown, though Crazi Taxi will release next year as Crazy Taxi: World Tour.
