Toei Animation has revealed that it will produce a new anime film based on Leiji Matsumoto’s Galaxy Express 999 franchise. Rintarō, who previously worked on the 1979 Galaxy Express 999 film, the Adieu Galaxy Express 999 film, and the Galaxy Express 999: Emeraldas: The Eternal Warrior special, is handling the original story draft for the new film.
Leiji Matsumoto released the original Galaxy Express 999 manga in Shonen Gahosha’s Weekly Shonen King magazine from January 1977 to November 1981, with a total of 18 volumes published. The series also inspired a television anime adaptation, which aired from September 1978 to 1981, as well as three films released in 1979, 1981, and 1998.
Yuzuru Shimazaki launched Ginga Tetsudō 999 Another Story: Ultimate Journey (Galaxy Express 999 Another Story: Ultimate Journey), a manga adaptation that retells Matsumoto’s original Galaxy Express 999, in Akita Shoten’s Champion RED magazine in March 2018.
