The new Final Fantasy IX 2D animated series is now in production at Euro Visual under the title Black Mages Legacy. The Black Mages Legacy series is set to feature 10 22-minute episodes in a single season, and it will take place after the events of Final Fantasy IX, focusing on Vivi’s children.
Euro Visual’s official website offers the following synopsis:
Final Fantasy, Black Mages Legacy
Season 1 – In production – 2D – 10 x 22 minutes
Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala and Doc, children of the hero Bibi (Vivi), are the last dark mages of the four continents. Today, they live happily in the city of ALEXANDRIA, guarded by its inhabitants who are rather friendly, although sometimes very curious. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not meant to last… One day, Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could it be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them?
As previously reported, the new Final Fantasy IX 2D animated series is on track for a 2028 targeted release. The 2D animated series is aimed at children ages 6 to 13.
There’s still no word on the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake, which first surfaced in a NVIDIA GeForce Now leak in 2021. It’s unclear what the remake’s status is, but similarly to the animated series, it’s worth noting that Square Enix has not outright confirmed that a remake was in development.
Final Fantasy IX is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, Android, and PC via Steam.
