The Final Fantasy IX 2D animated series appears to be back in production for a 2028 targeted release, according to a new issue from French magazine Écran Total. The magazine’s report notes that Euro Visual is now handling the Final Fantasy IX animated series heading into the 2028 release. The studio took over the project after the closure of animation company Cyber Group Studios earlier this year.

Bluesky user ensis.bsky.social posted the excerpt of the report, and you can read the English translation of the story synopsis below, via RPG Site:

Mel, Kolm, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc, children of the hero Bibi, are the last black mages of the four continents. Today, they live happily in the city of Alexandria, guarded by its rather friendly, though sometimes very curious, inhabitants. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not to last… One day, Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could this be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them?

The 2D animated series is aimed at children ages 6 to 13, and there will reportedly be 13 episodes. Each episode has a 22 minute runtime, but it should be noted that Square Enix has not officially announced a premiere date, along with many other details, for the series.

There’s still no word on the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake, which first surfaced in a NVIDIA GeForce Now leak in 2021. It’s unclear what the remake’s status is, but similarly to the animated series, it’s worth noting that Square Enix has not outright confirmed that a remake was in development.

Final Fantasy IX is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, Android, and PC via Steam.
