Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a Japan-only PlayStation 5 Digital Edition model will be released on November 21 for 55,000 yen (roughly $356, tax included). Pre-orders for this new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Japan-only model will open on November 13 in Japan.
As shown in the November 11 State of Play, the Japan-only PlayStation 5 can only be used with PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan. The only system language is Japanese, and the system includes the base 825 GB of SSD storage space. The new model is cheaper than the regular SKU PlayStation 5 in Japan, which is priced at 72,980 yen (roughly $473). This is likely Sony’s latest initiative to combat sales of Nintendo Switch 2, which costs 49,980 yen (roughly $340).
Sony Interactive Entertainment recently released its financial results for the three months ended on September 30, 2025, revealing that PlayStation 5 sales reached approximately 84.2 million units. According to sales numbers from the financial results, 3.9 million PlayStation 5 units were shipped worldwide during the latest quarter. This is up 100,000 units from the same period during the previous fiscal year.
119 million active users were on PlayStation Network as of September 30, which is up three million from the same period exactly one year ago. Combined PS4 and PS5 software sales reached 80.3 million units during the quarter, resulting in a 2.6 million increase year-over-year.
6.3 million of the software sales were first-party games, which is up one million units from the same period last fiscal year. What’s more, 72% of the software sales were full game digital downloads, resulting in a 2% year-over-year increase from the same period in the previous fiscal year.
