Herdling Review – All for One and One for All

An emotional and quiet journey worth taking.

Published:

When you dive into Herdling, you’re not entering a game that demands precision, lightning-fast reactions, or top-notch reflexes. Instead, you’re stepping into a warm, peaceful world where caring, guiding, naming, and connecting are just as important as solving a puzzle. Brought to life by Okomotive, the creators of the FAR games, Herdling offers a wordless, emotional narrative based on community and atmosphere.

A Gentle, Emotional Core

At its heart, Herdling is about connection. You play a girl named Via who encounters a herd of shy, mythical creatures called Calicorns, who are gentle, horned beings with shaggy fur and glowing eyes that are equal parts charming and mystical. Each Calicorn is unique: individually named, animated with subtle personalities, and deeply lovable as a result. The game’s narrative style remains quiet, detached from dialogue or combat, instead carried by visual cues, haptic interactions, and an atmospheric narrative style. This restrained approach ensures that the game world immediately takes focus, and you develop a personal emotional connection.

Your most important tool is a “magic wand,” but this is not about micromanagement. Instead, Herdling offers a guidance system: you set the direction, and the Calicorns respond with gentle independence – sometimes slowly, sometimes digressing, but always lively. It’s the difference between commanding a machine and herding a living, breathing herd. With the right timing, you can even trigger stampedes, which are really exciting moments when the herd charges forward together. These are absolutely perfect for climbing steep slopes or clearing paths. I found these moments to feel like brief, exciting rewards in an otherwise calm gaming experience.

A Lively and Playful Ecosystem

The Calicorns are anything but mechanical. The development team has emphasized their individuality, thanks to subtle movement habits, dynamics between leaders and followers in the herd, and quirks such as curiosity that make them seem alive. These nuances are the result of genuine dedication, as the animators studied alpacas, cows, goats, and yaks on real hikes to capture authentic movements. Their design is also inspired. It balances accessibility with a touch of the uncanny. Think of Eastern European kukeri costumes: covered in fur, adorned with bells, and mysteriously disturbing. That aura is found here around the Calicorns, making them appear both cute and mystical.

Despite the calming atmosphere, Herdling is not entirely free of tension. Dangers lurk with cliffs, dangerous terrain, and predators. Careless mistakes can injure or even kill Calicorns. However, the game also offers a compassionate safety net: an easy mode in which Calicorns cannot die. This keeps the journey accessible to anyone who values an emotionally safe experience. You can choose how to play, and I always appreciate that in a game.

Danger Around Every Corner

In a section set in an urban environment full of fences, gates, and enclosed Calicorns, Herdling shows early on what makes it special. Guiding these creatures never feels demanding. If one drifts off or gets stuck in a corner, a gentle nudge is enough to bring it back. Frustration never arose for me, as the herd’s slow growth was very satisfying. As the game progresses, the game world opens up with expansive valleys, mist-shrouded forests, and winding paths that invite you to observe your surroundings and proceed with patience. Once again, Herdling trusts you to set your own pace and explore the world at your desired rhythm.

What makes Herdling special is how seamlessly all its elements fit together. The atmosphere immediately captivates with picturesque landscapes and a dreamlike quality that tells its story without dialogue or lengthy explanations. It is a world you want to linger in rather than rush through. The core mechanics reflect this philosophy; instead of demanding absolute precision or punishing mistakes, herding the Calicorns is about guidance, patience, and feeling. Each movement is more like a gentle suggestion than a rigid command. This feeling of connection is deepened by the Calicorns themselves. Each one feels unique, with names, quirks, and animations that bring them to life. Losing a member of the herd feels like something much more than just a gameplay setback. You form bonds with the creatures, and their loss can be emotionally devastating. Even though the journey involves risks, the tension always remains bearable.

A Heartfelt Journey

It’s obvious that the team at Okomotive has put enormous craftsmanship into this experience. From the studies of real animal movements to the design of the folklore-inspired Calicorns, every detail seems carefully thought out. This attention to detail ensures that Herdling resonates as an experience, going beyond what you might expect out of a game about herding. Fans of titles such as Journey, Spiritfarer, or The Last Guardian will immediately recognize a familiar tone in Herdling. As in these games, the focus is not on combat or competition, but on emotions, atmosphere, and relationships. At the same time, Herdling retains its own identity. While Journey primarily deals with loneliness and Spiritfarer deals with letting go, Herdling tells a story about guiding, protecting, and growing together.

It thus clearly positions itself in the “cozy games” genre but offers enough excitement and responsibility to avoid slipping into a purely feel-good experience. Herdling is aimed at players who value atmosphere and emotional depth. Those who often feel stressed by tricky platforming sequences or complex action games will find nothing of the sort here. I think even experienced players looking for a creative break will find a worthwhile experience. The choice between normal and safe modes opens the game up to a wide audience, so really, anyone can pick up the game and play.

Ready Your Tears

Herdling is a game that takes its time and allows you to do the same. It is a quiet adventure, carried by atmosphere, empathy, and the joy of togetherness. Those who embark on it will experience an emotional journey that is both calming and touching. It is the kind of game that not only has an effect in the moment, but also lingers afterwards, like a gentle dream that remains in your memory even after you wake up.
