Rod Fergusson has announced that he will be be re-joining the Bioshock series as the head of the studio behind Bioshock 4, Cloud Chamber. Previously, he joined Irrational Games to help finish development of Bioshock Infinite.
The announcement comes amid layoffs and restructuring at Cloud Chamber. Reportedly, Bioshock 4 recently failed a review from executives at 2K Games. The area that supposedly needs the most work is the narrative, which Cloud Chamber will rework in the coming months. As a result of the issues, 2K Games ousted Cloud Chamber’s head, Kelley Gilmore. It has also moved creative director Hogarth de la Plante to a publishing role. Fergusson said the following in a statement:
“Would you kindly allow me to share some news?
Some of you guessed it, I’m returning to 2K to lead a series that means a lot to me as the new Head of the BioShock Franchise. I’ll be heading up Cloud Chamber and overseeing development of the next BioShock game, along with franchise extensions like the in-development Netflix movie.
While I’m excited to get started in the coming weeks, I recognize the studio restructuring is a difficult time for the team. I’m deeply grateful for the work done so far, and I’m committed to building a BioShock game we’ll be proud of and that our players will love.
For now, the firehose of onboarding awaits, and I look forward to sharing more when I can.”
The original Bioshock trilogy (Bioshock, Bioshock 2, and Bioshock Infinite) is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
