Atari has announced that it has entered into an agreement with the Thunderful Group to acquire approximately 82 percent of its outstanding shares. The acquired shares and votes are worth €4.5 million.
Thunderful Group has previously worked on games such as the Steamworld franchise and Viewfinder. There will be a restructuring plan for the company later this year, aimed at reorganizing its publishing and development operations. As part of the reorganization, CEO Martin Walfisz will step down by December 31, 2025.
Atari Chairman and CEO Wade Rosen said the following about the acquisition of Thunderful Group in a press release:
“This Transaction marks another important milestone in Atari’s development with the expansion of its publishing and development capabilities in the European region. Thunderful is recognized for publishing and developing critically acclaimed games, and with the announced transformation plan, as well as the quality and commitment of Thunderful’s teams, we are confident that Thunderful will be returning to a profitable growth path while helping to further develop Atari operations in Europe.”
Recently, Thunderful and Sad Owl Studios announced that Viewfinder will be available on Xbox Series X|S on August 12, and the game will release for Nintendo Switch in winter. Viewfinder was initially released on PlayStation 5 and PC in July 2023. In December 2023, it released for the PlayStation 4.
