Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a lawsuit against Tencent in the California federal court, alleging that the company ripped off Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series with Polaris Quest and Aurora Studio’s open-world survival crafting game Light of Motiram, according to a new Reuters report.
The lawsuit filed by Sony describes Light of Motiram as a “slavish clone” with identical story themes and artistic elements to Horizon. In the lawsuit, Sony also disclosed that the company declined an offer from Tencent to collaborate on a new Horizon game in 2024 before Tencent announced Light of Motiram.
The lawsuit notes that journalists have described Light of Motiram as a “knock-off” of Horizon, and one even called the game “Horizon Zero Originality.” Sony asked the court for an unspecified amount in monetary damages, along with an order that blocks Tencent from violating Sony’s IP rights. Sony and Tencent did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Before the lawsuit, Light of Motiram was announced for a 2025 release on PlayStation 5, iOS, Android, and PC via Steam. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Shanghai branch promoted Light of Motiram back in November 2024, but the Weibo and Bilibili posts have since been removed.
Tencent has not updated gamers on the release of Light of Motiram since April 28, when the company released a gameplay trailer highlighting the Outcast Forest.
