Asahi’s Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Oni manga has recently returned after a 4-month long hiatus which started on January 28. The latest chapter released on June 3.

The manga first released in Futabasha’s Monthly Action magazine in 2022. It later moved to Futabasha’s Web Action website in 2024. The most recent compiled volume released in September 2024. The reason for the manga’s hiatus is currently unknown.

Before it, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei: Iro Tōtoshi-hen was the latest entry in the Higurashi franchise. It launched in Square Enix’s Gangan Online website in 2023 before ending earlier this year on February 12. The series is described as the “answer arc” for the  Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei manga.

Steam describes one of the visual novel adaptations of the franchise, Higurashi When They Cry Hou, as follows:

It’s June, and the summer heat has arrived earlier than it does most years. By day there are crickets, and by night there are cicadas.

We’re in Hinamizawa, a small village in the countryside. There are fewer than two thousand people here. But every year, there is an event.

This event is a mysterious death.

On a certain day in June, someone dies, and someone else goes missing.
The series of deaths is connected to the upheaval surrounding the dam construction project. A murder case that was covered up is being reenacted. Is it a conspiracy? A coincidence? Or perhaps a curse?

So, there is no way to avert tragedy. There is no choice but to give up. But don’t give up.

Only you can stand up to this.
