After months of speculation, NetherRealm Studios has finally confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer receive new DLC content. While there will be new balance adjustments and bug fixes, there will be no more additional characters or story chapters.
In a statement on the official Mortal Kombat 1 Twitter/X account, NetherRealm Studios said the following: “We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on. We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”
Last year, Insider Gaming reported that future Mortal Kombat 1 DLC has been cancelled. The reason for this is supposedly due to the sales for the recent expansion, Khaos Reigns, underperforming. The cancelled DLCs would’ve included a third Kombat Pack, as well as a new story expansion. As the statement implies, NRS likely cancelled the DLC so it can work on its next major project. It is unknown if the project will be another Mortal Kombat, a new Injustice, or something else entirely.
Recently, NetherRealm Studios released the Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch. On Nintendo Switch, it costs $59.99, while on other platforms, it costs $69.99. It includes movie skins for the upcoming Mortal Kombat II movie Johnny Cage, Shao Khan, Kitana, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. The film will release on October 24, 2025. The Definitive Edition also comes with the the previously released Khaos Reigns story expansion, extra cosmetics, and all of the DLC characters and Kameos.
