Nintendo Switch 2 Supports VRR in Handheld Mode Only at Launch

Not ruled out for docked mode in the future.

    Published:

Nintendo confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) in handheld mode only at launch on June 5. Originally, the official was stated that Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR on compatible TVs, but Nintendo has since apologized and corrected this.

“Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only,” a Nintendo representative told Nintendo Life. “The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error.”

VRR for Nintendo Switch 2 is not ruled out completely, however. When asked about potential VRR support for the console’s dock, Nintendo notes it has nothing to announce at this time. It’s possible that a new update could come at a later date to bring VRR support in docked mode.

Moreover, Nintendo recently announced several free Nintendo Switch 2 updates for 12 first-party Nintendo Switch games with free visual upgrades, improved frame rates, GameShare and GameChat support, and HDR support. Updates will be available on June 5 for ARMS, Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, Game Builder Garage, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on June 5 for $449.99. A bundle will be available for $499.99 featuring Mario Kart World. Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 at Best Buy, Walmart and Target went live on April 24 and quickly sold out within just a few hours. However, Nintendo and other retailers will periodically replenish stock leading into launch. Other games like Cyberpunk 2077 and upgrade packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will also be available.
