Thanks to Jinshi’s help with preparing fruits and ingredients, The Apothecary Diaries episode 39 saw Maomao make ice cream with Xiaolan for Lady Loulan to make up for the broken ice from the previous episode. The ice cream got the attention of Shisui, who also helped Xiaolan calm down from her grief over the ice-breaking incident.
The latter half of the episode focused on Maomao’s diagnosis of breech birth for Gyokuyou’s child, which could endanger the mother and child’s lives. Maomao decides to rely on the expert help from her own father, who was exiled from the palace during an incident reminiscent to the one they’re now experiencing.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 episode 40 premieres on Friday, April 25 at 9:15 a.m. PDT / 12:15 p.m. EDT on Crunchyroll. The new episode is titled “Festering Resentment” and it will stream with English subs first, followed by the English dub at a later date. 12 episodes will release in the second cour of Season 2, according to the anime’s schedule.

What to Expect in Episode 40
To support Lady Gyokuyou, who may face complications during her child’s birth, Luomen—Maomao’s foster father and fellow apothecary—arrives at the inner palace’s medical office. Luomen wastes no time assessing the situation and prepares a sample document for the court ladies.
Moreover, while delivering the document, Maomao encounters an elderly eunuch that tells her Luomen went through the same ordeal before being expelled from the palace. Maomao is somewhat shaken by his words, and to uncover the cause of these feelings, she decides to visit someone a certain individual.
