After years of waiting, speculation, and anticipation, Nintendo has finally revealed the Nintendo Switch 2 via a new trailer. Nintendo released a two-minute “first-look” preview initially titled “An Update from Nintendo.”
The trailer showcases the original Switch before transforming into the new hardware. As previous rumors implied, the console has a new stand, new magnetic joycons, a mysterious new button, and a new dock and handheld base. Further, the trailer teases the next entry in the Mario Kart franchise right at the end.
It also confirms that the console will release in 2025 and that a showcase direct will be held on April 2. The trailer ends with the following clarification on new Nintendo Switch 2 games and backwards compatibility:
“Plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo Switch 2 plays both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date.”
Additionally, Nintendo will hold the “Nintendo Switch 2 Experience.” The experience will allow players to get an early look at the upcoming console at “events held around the world.” The experience will be held at New York from April 4 to April 6, Los Angeles from April 11 to 13, and Dallas from April 25-27. Lastly, the Nintendo Switch 2 will release at some point in 2025. Previously announced games like Metroid Prime 4 will likely be available on the system, alongside the implied next entry in the Mario Kart franchise, and more titles that it will reveal soon. Nintendo will reveal more details at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2.
