Earlier today, many reports began circulating based on a mistranslation of Nobuo Uematsu stating that Fantasian is his last work for video game music. Uematsu had previously disclosed through various interviews earlier this year that he did not plan to compose a full video game soundtrack by himself following Fantasian, stating his age and wish to work on multiple projects. This mistranslation was picked up by many outlets and users on Twitter (X), resulting in Uematsu having to make a statement.
Uematsu (65) is best known for his work on the Final Fantasy series. The famed composer was singlehandedly responsible for the soundtracks of the first nine titles, including Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy IX. He also composed music for Final Fantasy X, joined by Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano. Beyond Final Fantasy, Uematsu has composed for dozens of games like The Last Story, Granblue Fantasy, and more.
As of now, the composer has already confirmed his involvement in the third and final title of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project. He composed both “Hollow” and “No Promises to Keep,” which were used in Remake and Rebirth, respectively.
This news comes right off the heels of the upcoming console release of Fantasian, the latest game from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Fantasian Neo Dimension is being published by Square Enix for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Windows and Steam. The game is set to arrive on December 5 and is packed with new features like English and Japanese voiceovers, a new difficulty, and more.
