Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Team Considering Unreal Engine 5 for Sequel

The team will consider using the engine, but is prioritizing development speed.

In a new interview with CDWORLD.jp, Naoki Hamaguchi sat down to discuss the technology behind Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The outlet discussed the game’s use of Unreal Engine 4, even asking Hamaguchi if the team plans to use Unreal Engine 5 on the third and final Final Fantasy VII Remake title.

In response, Hamaguchi shared that the team needs to assess the pros and cons of UE5, but they will consider it. He states that he believes the thing players want the most is getting the final game as soon as possible. If the team believes switching to Unreal Engine 5 will accelerate the timeline for the final Final Fantasy VII Remake title, they’ll switch over, but if not, they may decide to continue on Unreal Engine 4.

Square Enix currently has Kingdom Hearts IV in development under Unreal Engine 5. That game switched over just after its reveal in 2022.

Earlier this year, Square Enix revealed that the company is set to “aggressively pursue a multi-platform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs.” It seems like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth could be making the jump to new platforms later this year. This would allow millions of new players to experience the title, with PC players eagerly awaiting the second chapter of the Final Fantasy VII remake project.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available now for PlayStation 5, with future platforms possible now that the exclusivity period over. Be sure to check out our 5/5 review of the game, where we stated, “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a generational RPG that exemplifies everything there is to love about the medium.”
