SEGA announced that the original Sonic Generations game will be removed as a standalone title from digital storefronts on September 9, a month and half before the release of Sonic X Shadow Generations. However, there’s good news, since those who already own the game will still be available to download and play it without issue.
Moreover, SEGA notes that Sonic Generations will still be available via bundles with other Sonic games on Xbox platforms and Steam. According to the franchise’s official Twitter account, mods for the Steam version of Sonic Generations will not be affected by the game’s removal as a standalone release as well.
Therefore, Sonic Generations will still be available via bundles of other iconic Sonic titles on Steam and Xbox. Existing owners of the title will still be able to download and play, as well. Lastly, we are happy to confirm that mods on the Steam version will NOT be affected!

Sonic X Shadow Generations will launch on October 25 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. The physical edition of Sonic X Shadow Generations will be sold for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch only. Pre-orders include Gerald Robotnik’s Journal, which details Shadow’s creation, and the Sonic Adventure legacy skin for Sonic the Hedgehog.
The Sonic Jam Legacy Skin for Sonic X Shadow Generations is inspired by Sonic’s first 3D appearance in the 1997 SEGA Saturn game. Those who sign up for the SEGA newsletter before November 1 will receive their DLC code and instructions after the game is released.
