Tomba! originally released on December 25, 1997 for the original PlayStation console in Japan. The classic PlayStation title would launch on July 16, 1998 in North America and August 28, 1998 in Europe. Although Tomba! remained in obscurity for more than two decades, the game will finally return in an enhanced port.

In a new developer interview with Limited Run Games, the original developers of the 1997 PlayStation 1 title, Tomba!, discussed details about the upcoming Special Edition. Tokuro Fujiwara, the game’s developer, talked about how “Tomba runs on 3D technology, with gameplay designed around 2D principles. This is why it’s described as a 2.5D game. I think 2D games have a certain kind of charm that 3D doesn’t… To bring my vision to life, I needed to use 2D principles along with 3D CG visuals. This allowed me to create something that felt new on the PlayStation.”

He also discussed the reasons why it’s important to bring Tomba back now: “Tomba has been around for a long time, but continues to be loved by many. I’ve long wished that the game could be accessible to more people on modern systems. Now that the opportunity is here, I think PlayStation fans today will get a ton of enjoyment out of Tomba.”

The final thing Limited Run Games confirmed is that Tomba Special Edition will be available on August 1. Presumably, it will be available first on the PlayStation 5, and later on the PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Limited Run will likely confirm more details about the upcoming game in the coming months.
