Nintendo has announced Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, a new version of the classic tournament cartridge for the titular console. The game will be available for the Nintendo Switch on July 18.
Nintendo initially held the first ever Nintendo World Championship in 1990. The tournament involved skilled players playing on a special Nintendo Entertainment System cartridge that had them running through various custom challenges focused on games such as Mario, Tetris, and more. Later, a new iteration of the tournament would be held during E3 2015.
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Announced, Releasing in Summer 2024
Nintendo has announced the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. The game will be available on July 18 for the Nintendo Switch. Additionally, a deluxe physical set is available at several local and online retailers, including Nintendo’s official website. The deluxe version is available for $59.99, while a digital version costs $29.99.

Paying tribute to the unforgettable in-person Nintendo World Championships held in 1990, 2015 and 2017, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition challenges players to battle through bite-sized bits of classic blockbusters. Both old-school and new-school players can enjoy the rush of over 150 speedrun challenges taken from 13 classic NES games.
Warm up by setting and beating your own best times in the single-player Speedrun Mode – unlocking new challenges and unique in-game pins along the way – then up to 8 players can compete locally in Party Mode. Nintendo Switch Online members can also enter World Championships Mode to submit their best times in five challenges that rotate each week and compete for a spot on the global leaderboard.
