Yoko Shimomura Begins Work on Kingdom Hearts IV Soundtrack (UPDATED)

Writing a number of songs at the moment.

In a new interview, Yoko Shimomura confirmed that she will be the composer for the soundtrack of Kingdom Hearts IV. Although this isn’t a surprise by any means, fans can rest assured that the Kingdom Hearts IV soundtrack will be incredible.

Kingdom Hearts IV marks the beginning of the Lost Master arc, which is the “second phase” of the Kingdom Hearts series. Sora will explore the mysterious city of Quadratum, which is located in a separate universe regarded as “fiction” to the traditional Kingdom Hearts universe. Like previous Kingdom Hearts titles, Kingdom Hearts IV’s soundtrack will be composed by Yoko Shimomura.

Yoko Shimomura Returns as Composer for Kingdom Hearts IV Soundtrack

Update – March 21: IGN has clarified that Shimomura did not explicitly state that Kingdom Hearts IV is one of the projects she’s working on. However, it’s more than likely going to be one of those projects, as she’s the main composer of the series.

After winning the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the GDC 2024 Choice Awards, Yoko Shimomura confirmed with IGN that she’s begun work on the soundtrack of Kingdom Hearts IV. Currently, she’s writing “a number of songs at the moment,” and she says she’s knee-deep in work right now without naming any other projects. Further details about the game’s development were not revealed, but this is a promising update nonetheless.

Yoko Shimomura also worked on the soundtrack for Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy Versus XIII-inspired action RPG, REYNATIS. The upcoming game is developed by Natsume Atari and published by NIS America and FuRyu. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth writer Kazushige Nojima worked on REYNATIS as the scenario writer.

The Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link mobile game was revealed alongside the highly-anticipated Kingdom Hearts IV during the 20th anniversary event in April 2022. Multiple betas were held for the game in Japan. The Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link closed beta test for Android was delayed to spring 2024 for further adjustments, however.

Lastly, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link launches in 2024 for Android and iOS worldwide. Kingdom Hearts IV is currently in development at Square Enix for unannounced platforms.
