Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Releasing on May 23

A major announcement to kick off MAR10 Day.

    Published:

During a recent video commemorating MAR10 day, Nintendo confirmed that Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on May 23. Pre-Orders for the game are now open.

Nintendo initially released The Thousand-Year Door in 2004 for the Nintendo Gamecube. The entry marked the last time the series stuck to a more traditional turn-based battle system. In the years since, Nintendo would release follow-ups with drastically different combat systems, such as Super Paper Mario, Paper Mario: Color Splash, Paper Mario: The Origami King, and more. In late 2023, Nintendo announced that The Thousand-Year Door would be getting a Switch remaster. They have now officially confirmed the release window for the upcoming title.

In a recent video released for MAR10 day 2024 (an annual event that celebrates Mario on March 10 specifically), Nintendo confirmed that Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door would release on May 23. The switch remaster is also available now to pre-order. The new remake will feature several new quality-of-life and graphical updates. However, the game’s core looks to remain intact, with the beloved characters and story from the original game remaining in the upcoming release.

Here’s an overview of the upcoming Nintendo Switch remaster, via the game’s eShop page:

Join Mario on an epic paper-adventure to collect the Crystal Stars before the X-Nauts do!

The nefarious X-Nauts are after the treasure behind the Thousand-Year Door! With a map from Princess Peach, and the help of a few locals, Mario journeys through a colorful world made of paper to find them first. To prevail in this quest, you’ll have to level up Mario and his friends, master timing-based attacks and badges to impress the audience on the stage of combat, and make use of all the abilities that come with being cursed—er, conveniently made of paper—like folding into a plane to cross big gaps or turning sideways to slip through narrow openings.

Lastly, the remastered version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will come to the Nintendo Switch on May 23.
