Bloomberg: Nintendo to Launch New Console in 2024 with 8-Inch LCD Display

Another report suggesting the next Nintendo system is set for 2024.

A new report came out tonight from Bloomberg outlining new key information on Nintendo’s next console. The report cites Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hayase, who states that Nintendo is doubling purchases of “amusement displays” in 2024. Sharp Corp. supplied LCD panels to a maker of a new console last year, which was undoubtedly Nintendo and the Switch successor. When Bloomberg reached out to Nintendo for comment on the matter, naturally, no comment was made.

The new console is apparently set to release with an 8-inch LCD display. This is a departure from the OLED screen seen on the Nintendo Switch OLED Model, but it is assuredly a decision made to keep the new system at a reasonable price point. Mulitple reports estimate it will be priced at $399.99.

A Switch successor has been rumored for many years at this point. Initially, many believed that the company would release a “Switch Pro” model sometime around 2019-2020 with improved power and performance over the launch model Nintendo Switch. Rumors began flowing in 2023 for a 2024 Q3 – Q4 launch period for the Switch successor. Earlier this month, Altec Lansing “guessed” that the console would launch in September 2024. It’s anyone’s guess at this point, but it’s time for a new system after seven years.

It feels that the only logical decision for Nintendo is to follow up on the Nintendo Switch with a direct successor, whether it be called the Switch 2 or something entirely different. The system is widely expected to have backward compatibility features, allowing players to play through their catalog of Nintendo Switch titles on new hardware. This is similar to the transition seen between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Additionally, many believe the next 3D Mario title will be released at launch alongside it.

News on the Switch successor could come at any time. Nintendo will likely prepare its annual February Nintendo Direct for the last slew of remaining Switch titles, but any time after that, the next system could be ready for reveal. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on any news regarding the next generation for Nintendo.
