Tonight at The Golden Globes, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli have made history with The Boy and the Heron winning Best Motion Picture – Animated! This is the first time in the history of The Golden Globes that a Japanese animated film has won this award in its 18-year history. Additionally, this is the first Golden Globe win for GKIDS, who distributed the movie.
It beat out other incredible movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination, Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume. This is an incredible honor that gives Miyazaki his first-ever Golden Globe award. His previous film, The Wind Rises was nominated for the Foreign Language film, but it did not win the award.
