In Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, Seox is a formidable character, challenging many in the community. This guide provides five essential tips to counter Seox’s strategies effectively. Understanding these tactics will significantly enhance your ability to combat Seox, turning daunting matches into winnable battles.
Disclaimer: There will be notations I will use in this guide to describe certain attacks. If you find yourself confused at any of these points, use the guide below as guidance:
Navigating the Dive Kick
Seox’s dive kick is a rapid, forward-advancing attack often used by players to gain an advantage. Seox players generally do this in neutral to get in on their opponent. It’s a daunting move but can be countered with patience and timing. When Seox launches a dive kick, respond with a 2H or 5H as he approaches. Alternatively, a well-timed Dragon punch (DP) can also stop this attack. However, be cautious, as Seox can bait these counters with feint dive kicks. It’s recommended to use 2H and 5H instead to counter the divekick, as it will generally have less recovery than whiffing a DP. The key is to remain alert and demonstrate to your opponent that these divekicks won’t go unchecked.
Shutting down this option will leave it on a cooldown time. This is great because you can focus on Seox’s other options. Such as the ultimate skill version!
Ultimate Skill Dive Kick Defense
While not granting block advantage, Seox’s ultimate dive kick can lead to a powerful combo if it connects. The strategy here mirrors the standard dive kick with a twist. When you anticipate this move, spot dodge or neutral jump right when Seox latches onto the wall. This tactic allows you to punish Seox upon his landing. For neutral jumps, choose a jumping attack that maximizes your punishment opportunity.
Keep watch of the opponent’s meter to see if they can use the ultimate dive kick. Understandably, it can be hard to distinguish between the ultimate and other versions of dive kick. It will take time, but you will get it down.
Countering Air Fireball
Seox’s air fireball is a strategic tool used to cover his advances. Many players will walk away from it, but it will only allow Seox to gain more space. Instead of retreating in response, predict his air fireball and advance behind him as he jumps. This positions you perfectly to punish Seox upon his landing. This requires keen observation and prediction skills, as misjudging can be risky. Focus on discerning Seox’s pattern to execute this counter effectively.
Another solution is to throw out a heavy fireball if you have one. This will clash against Seox’s fireball and leave you both at safe distances. If you predict the air fireball, depending on the character you play, you can use any version of a fireball that could damage Seox. Play around with this in training mode and see what your character can do.
Handling 5U/Demon Step
Seox’s demon step is a forward-moving attack, creating a phantom afterimage that advances towards the opponent. This afterimage can be struck, allowing for a counter. As soon as Seox releases his clone, launch an attack appropriate to your distance. Use faster attacks for close range and longer attacks for far range. Additionally, Seox can teleport to his opponent upon afterimage contact. Be ready to follow up with a special move or super-attack, potentially catching Seox off-guard.
If you don’t show the Seox player that you have an answer to 5U, they will feel free to get in anytime. Demon Step requires no resources, so Seox can use it anytime. Always be ready for it at mid and far ranges. Once you counter it, you will leave the Seox player feeling surprised.
Overcoming Six-Claw Execution
One of the key offensive moves for Seox in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the Six-Claw Execution, which has various follow-ups. After blocking the heavy version of this move, you can consistently mash 5L to counteract the follow-up options. If the Seox player does the Archdemon Kick or Wolf’s Howl follow-ups, you will block them while mashing 5L. They can’t frame-trap you with those follow-ups because the string is tight. The Snake Bite and Shadow Trace follow-ups are the ones your 5L will punish. If the Seox player does backdash Shadow Trace, you won’t hit them, but they are far away from you. This leaves you in an advantageous position. By mashing after blocking the heavy version of Six-Claw Execution, you cover all the options they can do afterward.
However, you must be aware of his light version of Six-Claw Execution. After blocking the light version, Seox can frame-trap you if you mash afterward using the medium and heavy versions of Archdemon Kick. If the Seox does the light Six-Claw Execution, don’t mash until you see that the Seox player has done the Archdemon Kick. After blocking this move, you are free to mash afterward. Anything else the Seox player does afterward will be punished, or he does Shadow Trace and backs away from you.
After the light version of Six-Claw Execution, Seox can use the Shadow Trace Forward and Snake Bite follow-ups to make you want to mash. However, the Archdemon Kick will just frame trap you if you press a button. The secret is that you can block and take your turn after the opponent does Shadow Trace Forward and Snake Bite. Both of those options are minus on block, leaving the Seox player in a situation where they can’t continue their offense anymore. This is where you can start your own offense. Remember, you don’t always have to mash. Sometimes you can just wait for your turn!
