Adult Swim announced the FLCL: Shoegaze anime will make its long-awaited premiere after the FLCL: Grunge finale. The anime was previously teased at Anime Expo 2023, but news was scarce until this week’s announcement.
First announced on March 17, 2022, FLCL: Grunge is a new anime sequel to the original FLCL and the franchise’s fourth installment. FLCL director Hitoshi Takekiyo returned to direct FLCL: Grunge at Mont Blanc Pictures. Production I.G. is producing the new FLCL: Shoegaze anime, which is directed by Yutaka Uemura.
FLCL: Shoegaze Release Date Confirmed
Adult Swim’s official Toonami Facebook page confirms the FLCL: Shoegaze anime will premiere on October 1 at 12:00 a.m. EDT. The premiere will happen exactly one week after the FLCL: Grunge finale on September 24 at 12:00 a.m. EDT exclusively on Toonami. A commercial for the upcoming anime series was revealed on the official Facebook page as well.
Production I.G. and Studio NUT are producing the new anime with Yutaka Uemura serving as director. The Pillows return to provide music for FLCL: Shoegaze. Moreover, Jason DeMarco, creative director of Toonami and senior vice president of action and anime for WarnerMedia, serves as the anime’s executive producer. Production I.G. USA’s Maki Terashima-Furuta is the producer for the new anime series once again.
Adult Swim viewers may also look forward to Lazarus, a new sci-fi anime by director Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo), studio MAPPA, and Sola Entertainment. Lazarus is a new sci-fi anime with action sequences by John Wick stuntman and director Chad Stahelski. The anime includes a score by renowned jazz and electronic artists/producers Kamasi Washington, Floating Points, and Bonobo. Lazarus is targeting a 2024 premiere on Toonami.
Lastly, FLCL: Grunge premiered September 9 on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block, and the third and final episode will release on September 23. FLCL: Shoegaze premieres on September 30 on the same programming block. Both anime serve as sequels to the original FLCL series.
